Prairie Seed Collection
Volunteers Wanted for Native Prairie Seed Harvest at Homestead National Monument of America
Help Homestead National Monument of America reach its goal of having 1,000 people volunteer from October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015. On Saturday December 6 at 1:00 p.m. you are invited to volunteer at Homestead National Monument of America to help collect native seed while discovering the amazing diversity of the tallgrass prairie. Meet at the Education Center for a short orientation to learn about the species that will be collected, then move out onto the prairie to help harvest seed. Some of the prairie grasses were over 10 feet tall this year! The locally collected native prairie seed will be used in maintenance and restoration projects. The seed collection will last until about 3 p.m. All ages are welcome; please wear long pants and long sleeve shirts along with sturdy shoes as you will be walking through the prairie.
“Volunteering is a great way for you to get connected to your National Park Service site, so please join us for this exciting event and learn more about the wonderful diversity of the tallgrass prairie and what you can do to protect this vanishing resource,” stated Homestead Superintendent Mark Engler.
Please call the monument at 402-223-3514 the day of the event if it is rainy or snowing to see if the event has been cancelled.
