Jul 8    Candy from the 1940s

Beatrice Public Library presents Tuesday Night with the Library
"Candy from the 1940's"
Cecilia Lawrence, North Platte Public Library Director

Tuesday, July 8
7 PM

In the 1940s, despite sugar rationing during World War II, some candy companies thrived.  Today, many of the candies we know and love originated during that period.

North Platte Library Director, Cecilia Lawrence, will make a presentation about these candies as part of the "Tuesday Night with the Library" series.  This program was originally developed as part of the One Book/One Nebraska project featuring "Once Upon a Town" about the North Platte Canteen as the 2014 selection.

"Some sugar companies couldn't operate on the rations," Lawrence said.  "Some not only survived by added new varieties."

One of those companies that flourished in the 1940s was Hershey.  The company won the military bids and produced much of the military chocolate.

The Mars Company and M&Ms were also born in the 1940s.  The fledgling company teamed with Hershey to produce several now famous candies.  In addition, Bazooka Bubble Gum, Dots and candy cigarettes were also popular in the 1940s during World War II.

For more information about this program, contact the Library at 402-223-3584 or www.beatrice.ne.gov/library.

Jul 24    Book Discussion at Beatrice Public Library
Beatrice Public Library Book Discussion

Thursday, July 24, 2014 - 7 pm
"Mortgage Your Heart" by Sophus Keith Winther
Book Discussion Leader: Glaura Falk, Granddaughter of a Danish homsteader

"Mortgage Your Heart" continues the story of rent-farmers Peter and Meta Grimsen & their six sons begun in "Take All to Nebraska."  But the central character in the novel is Hans, who is fifteen when the story begins and 24 at the end.  The book contains many depictions of farm work: 18 hour wheat harvesting days in the July heat; picking sharp stalks of milkweed in the heavily mudded cornfields; heroic night rescues of farm animals from flooding washes.  The novel ends in 1917, during great farm prosperity brought on by World War 1.
