Sep 14    The Case of the Mysterious Homesteader
The Case of the Mysterious Homesteader

Clap on your deerstalker, grab your magnifying glass, and join Artist-in-Residence Vicki Cain as she attempts to uncover the hidden truths in “The Case of the Mysterious Homesteader.” Just who was this mysterious homesteader? What was he looking for? Where did he come from? Why did he homestead? When did it all take place? This exciting program is free with no registration required, and will take place at Homestead National Monument of America’s Heritage Center on Sunday, September 14, at 2 p.m.

By using Sherlock Holmes’ patented (UK Patent GB 221Bbakerstreet) sleuthing techniques in combination with actual historical documents found in homestead record databases, Vicki will demonstrate how to use the Homestead’s vast public resources to attempt to solve your own family's historical mysteries—and who knows what you might find?

Vicki Cain is the author of "Travels with Judy: In Search of Steinbeck's America." She grew up in Beatrice and is the great-granddaughter of Nebraska Homesteader, T.F. Baird. She knows firsthand what it’s like to decipher family history based on sparse clues like memories, documents, and homestead lore. The recently digitized Nebraska homestead records provide a wealth of untapped information!

“Vicki Cain will share the homestead records with the public in a fun and personal way—an opportunity not to be missed!” stated Superintendent Mark Engler.

Remember, Homestead National Monument of America has an exciting schedule of events planned for 2014. Keep up with the latest information by following us on Twitter (HomesteadNM), Facebook (HomesteadNM), and Instagram (HomesteadNPS).

Sep 17    Naturalization Ceremony
Naturalization Ceremony on Constitution Day at
Homestead National Monument of America

Homestead National Monument of America is honored to host a United States Citizenship and Naturalization Ceremony on Wednesday, September 17, 2014.  New citizens will take their Oath of Allegiance to the United States at the ceremony.  The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. in the Education Center’s Courtyard.  The public is encouraged to attend.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. Citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling the requirements established by Congress. After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy nearly all the same benefits, rights and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to native-born U.S. Citizens, including the right to vote.

“The Homestead Act encouraged both immigration to the United States and migration within the country. The Naturalization ceremonies we hold today reflect the basic homesteading principle of welcoming new citizens to build our country,” stated Superintendent Mark Engler.

Prior to the ceremony the Nebraska Supreme Court and Nebraska Bar Foundation will be conducting a free class for high school students from noon to 1:30 pm. The class will focus on the United States Constitution and the knowledge required to pass the naturalization test.  Judge Paul Korslund will be talking about role of law and what judges do; Raul Escobar, a certified court interpreter, will be speaking about helping provide court proceedings in an understandable language; and Anita Mayo, Omaha attorney and naturalized citizen, will talk about her ceremony and pride in becoming an American citizen.

Remember, Homestead National Monument of America has an exciting schedule of events planned for 2014. Keep up with the latest information by following us on Twitter (HomesteadNM) and Facebook (Homestead National Monument of America).
Homestead National Monument of America is a unit of the National Park Service located four miles west of Beatrice, Nebraska. Hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Sep 21    Literary Walk Through Tallgrass Prairie
Steven Shively Leads Literary Walk
Through Tallgrass Prairie at Homestead National Monument of America

The tallgrass prairie at Homestead National Monument of America is beautiful in the fall. Come and enjoy its beauty along with the words of Willa Cather, Bess Streeter Aldrich and other Nebraska writers on a Literary Walk on Sunday, September 21 at 2 p.m.  Dr. Steven Shively will lead the walk, stopping throughout and reading the words of these authors as they describe homesteading experienced on the tallgrass prairie.

Shively is currently an associate professor at Utah State University and is a nationally recognized expert on the works of Willa Cather. He edited the book, “Teaching the Works of Willa Cather,” and has also written several journal articles on Cather. Before returning to work on his doctorate he taught English at Beatrice High School.

“We expect the prairie to be especially beautiful this year and the walk using the words of Nebraska authors will make for a truly unique experience,” said Superintendent Mark Engler, “and we are excited to have someone with Dr. Shively’s expertise lead the walk.”

Homestead National Monument of America is excited to welcome Sue King as our next Artist-in-Residence. King is a nationally recognized textile artist from Ohio who focuses on figurative and portrait work. With a lifelong love of the outdoors, she interprets the cultural and historical significance of our amazing National Parks through the use of textiles, dying, printing and stitch. She was the 2013 Artist in Residence at Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado and 2014 Artist in Residence at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in Nebraska. She looks forward to sharing her work with Homestead’s visitors during her upcoming residency.

Don’t miss this opportunity to work with such a unique and talented artist! Join her for a public program at 2 p.m. on Sunday, September 28 at the Education Center. Attendees will learn about the art of quilting, and how the quilts made by women homesteaders have informed King’s own work. Visitors will also view a sampling of the artist’s work and have an opportunity to make their own silk-screened fabric postcard as a memento of their visit to Homestead National Monument of America. View more of her work by visiting her website: http://sueking.visualserver.com/index.cfm.
