Join the Homestead National Monument of America each weekend in January and February for the Homestead Film Festival at the Education Center.

This year's festival will feature Ken Burns' "The West" with nine episodes over nine weekends.  Beginning Saturday and Sunday, January 3 & 4 at 2 pm, with Episode 1, "The People," see a different episode each week until March 1.

This masterpiece is a nine-part examination of all things "West," from the prehistoric through 1914.  It shares all aspects of the Westward Expansion in an epic saga of America's most turbulent region.  The film brings the West to lfe, overturning old stereotypes, discovering new personalities, and exploring countless triumphs and tragedies.

Gage County to host beef conference

Nebraska Extension in Gage County is hosting a Three State Beef Conference Meeting on Thursday, January 15 at 11 am - 2pm at the Extension Office Meeting Room on the Fairgrounds in Beatrice.  All Southeast Nebraska and Northeast Kansas beef producers are welcome.  Prior registration is not required but very helpful for the meal count.  The registration fee is $25 per person.

The outstanding program will include Dr. Rick Rasby discussing Supplemental Strategies; Dr. Bruce Anderson on Forage Systems; and Dr. Patrick Gunn of Iowa State discussing Herd Fertility Impacts.  Our Guest Host Educator will be UNL Extension Educator Gary Lesoing.

A observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is being sponsored by the Evangelism and Nurture Teams of Centenary United Methodist Church, 608 Elk Street, Beatrice, on Sunday, January 18.  A soup dinner will be served at noon in the church dining room, with a freewill offering for UMCOR's Refugee Assistance Fund.

At 1 pm, a program on the Yazidi refugees in Iraq will be presented by Dough Hardt, Director of the Center for Interfaith Studies and Culture of Union College, Lincoln.  The public is invited to attend.

“The Man and The Dream” Film to Celebrate Martin Luther King Day
at Homestead National Monument of America
 
In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Homestead National Monument of America invites you to the monument to view “The Man and The Dream” on Monday, January 19, 2015, 2 p.m. at the Education Center.  “This day is an opportunity to honor Dr. King and his legacy of service,” stated Superintendent Mark Engler.
 
“The Man and The Dream” is an hour long film that explores the life of Dr. King from childhood through his assassination in 1968.  This year is the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the event that set the stage for King’s rise to national prominence as a civil rights leader.

The program will feature love songs and readings all about love.  Gwenith Closs Colgrove, soprano, and other singers will perform with Willa Foster Jones, accompanist.

A spirit of the Welsh Pioneers, Mrs. John R. Morris, will appear and will relate an amusing story about her 50th Golden Wedding Party at Carroll, Nebraska in 1921.

Following the program, a Tea Party will be served in a congenial setting amongst Welsh-American quilts, samplers and antique tools.

Join the Homestead National Monument of America each weekend in January and February for the Homestead Film Festival at the Education Center.

This year's festival will feature Ken Burns' "The West" with nine episodes over nine weekends.  Beginning Saturday and Sunday, January 3 & 4 at 2 pm, with Episode 1, "The People," see a different episode each week until March 1.

This masterpiece is a nine-part examination of all things "West," from the prehistoric through 1914.  It shares all aspects of the Westward Expansion in an epic saga of America's most turbulent region.  The film brings the West to lfe, overturning old stereotypes, discovering new personalities, and exploring countless triumphs and tragedies.

Jan 24    Singing Youth of Nebraska Festival Choir
The public is invited to attend the semi-annual "Singing Youth of Nebraska" Festival Choir performances, sponsored by the Nebraska Choral Director's Association.

Seven sites across Nebraska will host the choirs throughout the months of January and February.  Students in grades 7 - 9 are nominated for the event by their vocal music director.  They will rehearse choral music throughout the day and will present a concert on January 24 at 4 pm in the Hevelone Center, under the direction of Nathan Helzer of Omaha.

More than 650 students will perform at seven sites across the state.  The public is invited to attend the performance; admission is $3 for anyone over the age of 12.

Participating schools at the Beatrice site include Tri County, Johnson County Central, Fairbury, Crete, Syracuse, Lincoln Southeast, Wilber-Clatonia, Meridian, Pawnee City, Nebraska City, and Beatrice.

The Nebraska Choral Directors Association was founding in 1962, just three years after our parent organization, the American Choral Directors Association.

Pet nail trims will be available from Noon to 2 pm on Sunday, January 25 at the Beatrice Animal Shelter at 300 Ella.  A new, pet-friendly fee schedule is in place.  Cost for the first animal is $10; after that it's $5 per animal.  Cost for retired seniors is $5 per animal.  All proceeds go to the animal shelter for the care of the critters.
