Mar 29 - Sep 7    "See the Great Plains" Exhibit
“See the Great Plains” Poster Series Ecotourism Exhibit
to Open at Homestead National Monument of America

Homestead National Monument of America is excited to announce the opening of its newest exhibit titled See the Great Plains.  The exhibit will open at the Monument’s Education Center on Sunday, March 29, 2015.  Designed by Lincoln, Nebraska artist Katie Nieland, See the Great Plains is a special ecotourism poster exhibit on loan from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Great Plains Studies.  The exhibit is free and open to the public and will be on display through Labor Day weekend.

See the Great Plains features 12 posters designed in a style that pays homage to the 1930s Works Progress Administration’s posters for the National Parks.  These posters feature scenes from across the Great Plains.  The poster series is designed to bring awareness to the beautiful destination sites throughout the region.  Each site has been identified by the Center for Great Plains Studies as an ecotourism site and encourages travelers to visit these ecological marvels.

“Ecotourism offers a way to combine conservation of biodiversity with new economic opportunities for rural towns across the Great Plains, and it’s the best way to engage with the natural beauty and wonder of the region,” said Dr. Richard Edwards, Director of the Center for Great Plains Studies.  With posters baring titles like “Bison Rebirth: See the Largest Land Mammal In North America” and “Dancing Chickens: The original Sandhills Hoe-Down” you will not want to miss your chance to see this exceptional exhibit!  Additionally, you can collect them all -- posters and postcards will be for sale at Homestead’s bookstores.

Apr 4    Lunar Eclipse Viewing at Homestead National Monument of America
Lunar Eclipse Viewing at Homestead National Monument of America

The parking lot at Homestead National Monument of America's Heritage Center will be open for early risers to watch a lunar eclipse this Saturday, April 4, 2015.  The parking lot will open at 5:00 am (CDT), with the partial eclipse starting at 5:17 am.  Totality happens at 7:00 am, and the moon sets at 7:09 am.  The Heritage Center sits on a high, open point and will be a perfect place to view the eclipse.  While there will not be a program, there will be an employee on site with binoculars and a spotting scope.  You are welcome to bring you own telescope, binoculars, and chairs.

Some fun facts:

- Lunar eclipses occur when the Moon passes within Earth's shadow, also called the "umbra".  As a lunar eclipse begins, the Earth's shadow first only slightly darkens the Moon.  Then, the shadow appears to "cover" part of the Moon, typically turning it a dark red-brown color (the same effect that causes sunsets to appear reddish).  However, the color can also be yellow, orange, or brown in color. This is because different types of dust particles and clouds in the Earth's atmosphere allow different wavelengths to reach the surface of the Moon.
-While this April 4 eclipse is considered a total lunar eclipse, you would need to be in Alaska to see the total eclipse. In Nebraska we will experience a partial eclipse, with a small sliver of the Moon remaining bright.

-Total lunar eclipses are rare – only about one in three lunar eclipses are total. However, every once in a while, four total lunar eclipses happen in a row. This is called a lunar tetrad. This April eclipse is the 3rd of four eclipses in a tetrad.  The next on will occur on September 27, 2015.

Apr 9    Bells Across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox
Join the National Park Service in Ringing “Bells across the Land: A Nation Remembers Appomattox”

For the past four years, the National Park Service and many other organizations and individuals have been commemorating the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War and the continuing efforts for human rights today. On April 9, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant met Confederate General Robert E. Lee to set the terms of surrender of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox, Virginia.

On April 9, 2015, in conjunction with a major bell ringing event at Appomattox Court House National Historical Park, the National Park Service and its partners invite individuals and communities across the nation to join in this commemoration. The bells will ring first at Appomattox at 2:00 p.m. (CDT) on April 9, 2015. The ringing will coincide with the moment the historic meeting between Grant and Lee at Appomattox Court House ended. While Lee’s surrender did not end the Civil War, the act is seen by most Americans as the symbolic end of four years of bloodshed.

After the ringing at Appomattox, bells will reverberate across the country. Churches, temples, schools, city halls, public buildings, historic sites, and others are invited to ring bells precisely at 2:15 pm (CDT) for four minutes (each minute symbolic of a year of war). If you have access to any such organizations, please encourage them to participate.

Homestead National Monument of America will join in the commemoration by ringing the school bell at Freeman School at 2:15 pm (CDT).  You are invited to join us, or simply step outside and listen to your community join in the ringing.

The end of the Civil War has different meanings to different people. Each organization may customize this idea to its own situation. We ask participants to ring bells across the nation as a gesture to mark the end of the bloody conflict in which more than 750,000 Americans perished. Some communities may ring their bells in celebration of freedom or a restored Union, others as an expression of mourning and a moment of silence for the fallen. Sites may ring bells to mark the beginning of reconciliation and reconstruction, or as the next step in the continuing struggle for civil rights. Curriculum materials are available for schools interested in participating.

Share your story and help us write history!

Schools, parks, and communities from all over the country will be participating in this event. Share how you observed it with #BellsAcrosstheLand2015. Stories will be compiled in one place to see how each one helps build our national story.

Please join us in the historic commemoration. Let bells ring across the land!  For more information contact Carol_Shively@nps.gov or John_Hennessy@nps.gov. For educational materials for schools contact  Amy_Bracewell@nps.gov.
