Picking Seeds! Volunteers Needed

Help collect seed from Homestead National Monument of America’s tallgrass prairie. Interested volunteers are invited to meet at Homestead’s Education Center on October 6, 2018 at 1 p.m. for a short orientation to learn about the species that will be collected before heading out to the prairie to harvest seed. All ages are welcome; please bring gloves and wear long pants and long sleeve shirts along with sturdy shoes as you will be walking through the prairie.
The seed will be used to restore disturbed areas and increase species diversity where needed.
“Volunteering is a great way for you to get connected to your National Park Service site, so please join us for this exciting event and learn more about the wonderful diversity of the tallgrass prairie and what you can do to help protect this vanishing resource,” stated Homestead Superintendent Mark Engler.

Please call the monument at 402-223-3514 the day of the event if it is rainy to see if the event is still occuring.

Sep 17    Naturalization Ceremony/Constitution Day
National Park Service News Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 11, 2018
Susan Cook 402-223-3514

Celebrate Constitution Day and Welcome New Citizens at a Naturalization Ceremony at Homestead National Monument of America

In celebration of Constitution Day, Monday, September 17, 2018, Homestead National Monument of America will host a United States Citizenship and Naturalization Ceremony at 2 p.m. Over 30 new citizens will take their Oath of Allegiance to the United States at the ceremony, which will take place at the Homestead Education Center. The general public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Constitution Day, also called Citizenship Day, is a federally-recognized observance that occurs every year on September 17th, the day the U.S. Constitution was signed. It exists to celebrate the Constitution and American citizenship, including citizenship attained through naturalization.

Naturalization is the process by which U.S. Citizenship is conferred upon foreign citizens or nationals after fulfilling a set of requirements established by Congress. After naturalization, foreign-born citizens enjoy all the same benefits, rights, and responsibilities that the Constitution gives to native-born U.S. Citizens, including the right to vote.

“The Homestead Act had a big impact upon immigration in the United States. People came from all over the world to pursue their American Dream, and the Homestead Act allowed many of them to achieve it,” stated Homestead National Monument of America’s Superintendent Mark Engler.

This is the second naturalization ceremony to take place at Homestead National Monument of America this year, with the first having occurred in June in celebration of Flag Day.

Remember, Homestead National Monument of America has an exciting schedule of events planned for 2018. Keep up with the latest information by following us on Twitter (HomesteadNM) and Facebook (Homestead National Monument of America).

Sep 18    Robber's Cave: Truths, Legends, Rocollections
Legend says the cave once served as a hideout for Old West outlaws. One popular local story claims nortorious outlaw Jesse Jrunes sought refuge in the cave after pulling a heist in Minnesota. Local historians, however, are skeptical. The cave was originally dug out of soft Dakota sandstone in the late 1860s for a brewery. That brewery closed after just a few years. On the sandstone walls, below the still visible pickax marks made by the men who dug them out, are thousands of carvings, the natnes and dates, symbols and initials of generations of people who spent their youth exploring the Robber's Cave tunnels.
Joel Green mentors highly gifted students in writing for Lincoln Public Schools. He loves local history, but there is nothing Green loves more than being a father. He lives in Lincoln, Nebraska, with his wife and daughter. He continues to give public and private tours of Robber's Cave when he's not teaching or writing a book about the place!
