Volunteers for the Big Blue River cleanup will be asked to work hard — and play hard — during an event that will clean up the river and celebrate a successful day with music, food and fun.
The event will kick off at 8 a.m. on Court Street and Memorial Drive. Volunteers will meet at that location for safety training and to sign up for the event.
Once the safety meeting is completed, volunteers will be dispersed to their particular area along the river between the Sixth Street Bridge and the Court Street Bridge.
That’s when the work begins.
Volunteers will be asked to pick up trash along the walking trail, or haul branches, brush and debris from the banks. Volunteers will also be in the river, removing trash that litters the river bed.
While the celebration will officially kick off at 2 p.m. in Chautauqua Park, Boy Scout Troops 85 and 221 will provide free canoe rides starting at the boat ramp at Riverside Park, beginning at 9 a.m.
The afternoon events will begin with a hot dog roast, courtesy of the Knights of Columbus. Organizers are planning an afternoon of musical entertainment and games for all ages.

Organizers are hoping for more than 200 volunteers along the river to begin the first step in the long-term goal of making the Big Blue River a vibrant part of the Beatrice community. Volunteers must be 16 years old or older. A liability waiver will be required of all participants.
