Campfire Program at Homestead: President Ulysses S. Grant

Dr. Thomas King, Director of the Secondary Education program at Doane College, will be the featured speaker at Homestead National Monument of America`s campfire program on Saturday August 7, 2010 portraying President Ulysses S. Grant. President Grant was the 18 th President of the United States and his term ran from 1869 to 1877. He saw the country through the turbulent post-Civil War era. Radical Reconstruction, expanding railroads, and westward migrations defined this phase in American history.

Tom King has been an educator for more than 30 years. He taught more than 15 years as a social studies/history teacher in Enid, Okla., before moving to Crete in 1992 to serve as the chair of Doane`s graduate education program and director of the secondary education program. Along with portraying Ulysses S. Grant, he teaches five different curriculum courses in the graduate education program and continues to direct the growing secondary education program.

The campfire program will also include a musical performance by guitarist John Bstandig. His fun, upbeat program is sure to entertain. John Bstandig, a Beatrice native, has performed around the area in various music festivals, including the annual Blue River Jam, and has been a friend of the monument for many years.
