Nearly 20% of US landfills are filled with food waste which results in a variety of problems. For example, organic waste in landfills generates methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, speeding up climate change. In 2015 alone, nearly 39 million tons of food waste made its way to US landfills whereas it could have been returned to the soil in a more beneficial way. Composting can significantly reduce this food waste problem, return valuable nutrients to the soil and help slow the devastating impacts of climate change. Come learn how you can make a difference by learning the basics of composting at a FREE demonstration and workshop with the Nebraska Conservation Education Fund. Even if you live in an apartment or smaller space, this event is still for you. Our demonstration will inform you on how to create a composting bin appropriate to a variety of living spaces.
