We will be hosting a speaker at our next Legislative Committee meeting on Monday, April 15 at Noon in the Carnegie Conference Room.
Renee Fry, executive director of OpenSky Policy Institute, will discuss Nebraska tax and budget policy and the issue of tax reform, a topic that has dominated the headlines this legislative session. OpenSky Policy Institute is a non-partisan, non-profit think tank that researches and analyzes Nebraska tax and fiscal policy. In the two-years since its inception, OpenSky has become a leading source of data and information for lawmakers, journalists and others interested in Nebraska’s tax and budget policies. Before joining OpenSky, Renee was the founding director of government relations for the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), and subsequently the med center’s director of public relations. Renee also worked several years for the Nebraska Legislature in a variety of roles, including Legal Counsel to Speaker Doug Kristensen, Legal Counsel to the Judiciary Committee under Senator Kermit Brashear, and Legislative Aide to Senator Joel Johnson. Renee received her BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her J.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The Legislative Committee may make recommendations to the Chamber Board to take positions on legislative, governmental and/or public issues affecting the Chamber membership or the business community. The Chamber, any member or committee may suggest an issue to the Legislative Committee for consideration.
The following questions shall be answered to the satisfaction of the group responsible for a position prior to that position being taken:
- Is the proposal of significance to the business community and will it affect the members of the Chamber?
- Will the Chamber’s statement of policy or position clarify, promote understanding of, or help solve the issue or problem?
The Beatrice Area Chamber of Commerce shall observe all local, state and Federal laws which apply to a non-profit organization as defined in Section 501(c)6 of the Internal Revenue Code.
The Chamber is interested in local, state and Federal issues, but is not concerned with partisan politics, political administration, or personalities in its approval or disapproval of issues of importance to the Beatrice area. The Chamber shall not, by resolution, or otherwise, be committed to the support or endorsement of any candidate for public office.
