The Case of the Mysterious Homesteader
Clap on your deerstalker, grab your magnifying glass, and join Artist-in-Residence Vicki Cain as she attempts to uncover the hidden truths in “The Case of the Mysterious Homesteader.” Just who was this mysterious homesteader? What was he looking for? Where did he come from? Why did he homestead? When did it all take place? This exciting program is free with no registration required, and will take place at Homestead National Monument of America’s Heritage Center on Sunday, September 14, at 2 p.m.
By using Sherlock Holmes’ patented (UK Patent GB 221Bbakerstreet) sleuthing techniques in combination with actual historical documents found in homestead record databases, Vicki will demonstrate how to use the Homestead’s vast public resources to attempt to solve your own family's historical mysteries—and who knows what you might find?
Vicki Cain is the author of "Travels with Judy: In Search of Steinbeck's America." She grew up in Beatrice and is the great-granddaughter of Nebraska Homesteader, T.F. Baird. She knows firsthand what it’s like to decipher family history based on sparse clues like memories, documents, and homestead lore. The recently digitized Nebraska homestead records provide a wealth of untapped information!
“Vicki Cain will share the homestead records with the public in a fun and personal way—an opportunity not to be missed!” stated Superintendent Mark Engler.
