"The Science of Music"
Presenter: Michael Swartz, Principal Bassist for the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra
Swartz will explore the relationship between science and music during two separate presentations at the Beatrice Public Library as part of the Summer Reading Program. Children between the ages of 5-12 are invited to a 2 PM program and the 7 PM program is for all ages.
The presenter will explain the process of inquiry and the scientific method, sound waves, vibration, acoustics, and the role of science in composition. Sound waves will be demonstrated using plastic tubing, funnels, a trombone mouthpiece, a steel ruler, a drum, and paper clips.
Swartz will also play the double bass throughout the performance. The pieces selected will include, but are not limited to: "The Elephant" from the Carnival of the Animals, "Baby Elephant Walk" by Henry Mancini and the "Solo from Symphony #1" by Gustav Mahler.
